Frequently asked

Who needs GCAA 4.1.D dangerous goods training?
Personnel responsible for processing or accepting dangerous goods consignments, or accepting mail containing dangerous goods. It also covers staff nominated by their employer to meet GCAA dangerous goods certification requirements and personnel acting as Dangerous Goods Post Holder for air operators, including no-carry operators, ground handling agents, helicopter operators, designated postal operators, freight forwarders and packaging suppliers.
How long is the 4.1.D course?
Initial training without Class 7 radioactive material runs 4 days (32 hours). Initial training including radioactive material runs 5 days (40 hours). Recurrent training runs 3 days (24 hours). Classes run 8am to 5pm at the DGR Aviation centre in Port Saeed, Dubai.
What is the difference between GCAA 4.1.D and IATA function 7.3?
They describe the same/similar function under two frameworks. GCAA 4.1.D is the function defined by the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in GCAA CAR Part VI. IATA 7.3 is the corresponding function under IATA.
Do I need the Class 7 radioactive material module?
Only if your employer requires it. If your operation accepts radioactive consignments, take the 5-day initial course that includes Class 7. If it does not, the 4-day version covers non-radioactive materials only. Check with your management or Dangerous Goods Post Holder (DGPH) before booking the class.
What topics does the 4.1.D syllabus cover?
The legal framework behind the regulations, applicability and training requirements, limitations and exceptions, classification of the nine classes of dangerous goods, identification, packaging requirements, marking and labelling, and the Shipper’s Declaration and air waybill requirements. Class 7 radioactive material is included where the employer requires it.
Is there an exam at the end of the 4.1.D course?
Yes. A final theory and practical assessment are held on the last day of class, covering knowledge, skills and application of the regulations. Throughout the course, simulation exercises and case studies on different consignment types build up to that assessment, so participants practise on realistic shipments before being tested.
What certificate is issued after 4.1.D?
Successful participants receive a certificate and an identification card. The certificate is valid for two years, after which recurrent training (3 days, 24 hours) is required to keep the qualification current and to remain eligible to accept dangerous goods consignments.
Do I need previous dangerous goods experience to join 4.1.D?
No. The initial course builds the framework from first principles, so participants new to dangerous goods are catered for. It is designed for staff nominated by their employer to meet GCAA certification requirements, including preparing DG consignments. If you already hold a valid certificate approaching expiry, book the 3-day recurrent course instead of the initial.
Can this course qualify a Dangerous Goods Post Holder?
Yes. This course is a prerequisite before one can attend the DGPH training, which is for operators, ground handling agents, helicopter operators, designated postal operators, freight forwarders and packaging suppliers.
What reference materials are used during the training?
Depending on the job function, the current-year IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations manual, workbook exercises and other relevant handouts.
Can 4.1.D be delivered at our facility?
Yes. This function is regularly delivered on-site across the UAE, on your shift pattern and using your own documentation as the worked examples. The approval, assessment and certificate are identical to the classroom course.
What is the pass mark?
80% for a pass and 90% for a distinction, assessed on Knowledge, Skills and Attitude by the training provider. Where applicable, an employer assessment should be completed within 12 months.
