Course overview

Class 7 is the one class most shippers never touch — until they do. Nuclear medicine doses, industrial radiography sources, well-logging tools and research material all move by air, and each is governed by limits, package types and indices that have no parallel in the other eight classes.

This programme covers activity limits and classification, excepted, Type A and Type B packages, the transport index and criticality safety index, the category label system, documentation, loading and segregation, and what is expected of the shipper and the carrier if a package arrives damaged.

Who should attend

  • Shippers of radioactive material
  • Acceptance staff handling Class 7 consignments
  • Medical and industrial radiation users
  • Freight forwarders handling Class 7 cargo
  • Safety and compliance personnel

What the course addresses

  • Activity limits and classification of radioactive material
  • Excepted packages and Type A packages
  • Transport index and label categories
  • Marking, labelling and documentation
  • Loading, segregation and incident procedures

Course objectives

Upon successful completion, participants should be able to:

  • Understand radioactivity, contamination and the units used in transport
  • Apply A1 and A2 activity limits to determine the package type
  • Classify excepted packages, Type A and Type B packages
  • Identify low specific activity material and surface contaminated objects
  • Determine the transport index and the criticality safety index
  • Apply the category I-White, II-Yellow and III-Yellow label system
  • Apply the correct marks, labels and package markings
  • Prepare and verify the Shipper’s Declaration and supporting documents
  • Apply separation distances, loading and segregation requirements
  • Understand exclusive use and the responsibilities of consignor and carrier
  • Respond to damaged, leaking or contaminated packages
  • Identify State and operator variations affecting Class 7 consignments

How the course runs

TrainingDuration
Initial training2 days (16 hours)
Recurrent training2 days (16 hours)

Resources during training

Current year IATA DG Regulations Manual and the UAE Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR) Part VI Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air. DGR Aviation will provide these for the duration of the training.

Class activities

Simulation exercises on the different types of radioactive materials, so participants progressively apply their knowledge and skills to prepare and accept them. A final assessment (theory and practical) on the last day of class assesses participants’ knowledge, skills and attitude in applying the Regulations.

Certificate awarded

A certificate is issued upon successful completion of the course. The certificate is valid for two years.

Importance of IATA radioactive material handling training

By enrolling in the IATA Radioactive Training course, you will gain a thorough understanding of the regulatory requirements, guidelines, and best practices related to the transportation of radioactive material consignments. This training will ensure that you are well-prepared to handle these materials in compliance with international standards and regulations.

Remember, it is crucial to maintain continuous education and stay updated with the latest developments in the field of radioactive material transportation, by regularly attending refresher courses and keeping abreast of regulatory changes.

About DGR Aviation

DGR Aviation Training Services LLC operates from Centurion Star Tower, Port Saeed, Deira, Dubai. We train aviation, cargo and logistics professionals in dangerous goods, at our own centre and at customer facilities across the UAE.

Training is delivered by approved instructors against the Competency-Based Training and Assessment framework, with the records kept so renewals can be flagged before a certificate lapses. Read our story →

Frequently asked

Who should take training on shipping radioactive material by air?
Personnel whose assigned responsibilities include preparing or processing radioactive materials for air transport. This may include nuclear medicine and radiopharmacy teams, industrial radiography and oil and gas service companies, research institutions, freight forwarders and cargo acceptance staff handling Class 7 consignments.
How long is the radioactive material course?
Initial training runs 2 days (16 hours) and recurrent training also runs 2 days (16 hours), delivered at the DGR Aviation centre in Port Saeed, Dubai, or in-house.
What does the course cover?
Legal responsibilities under civil aviation and nuclear regulatory requirements for the safe transport of radioactive material by air, and how to navigate Section 10 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. Topics include classification, identification, packing, marking, labelling and documentation requirements for Class 7.
How does this training relate to broader dangerous goods training?
Radioactive material is covered within broader function-based dangerous goods training where relevant. This two-day programme provides focused instruction and practical exercises on Class 7 consignments, but it is not a separately approved GCAA class.
Which authorities regulate radioactive shipments from the UAE?
Air transport requirements come through civil aviation regulation and IATA DGR Section 10, while possession, handling and licensing of radioactive sources fall under the UAE nuclear regulatory authority. The course covers the aviation side and explains where the two sets of obligations meet.
Is there a practical assessment?
Yes. Simulation exercises run across different types of radioactive material so participants build up to a final theory and practical assessment on the last day of class, testing knowledge, skills and application of the regulations.
What certificate is issued after completing the training?
DGR Aviation issues a course-completion certificate following successful assessment. The certificate is valid for two years but does not represent a separate GCAA class approval.
What materials are provided?
The current-year IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations manual and UAE Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR) Part VI, Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air, supplied for the duration of the training.
Which packages does the course cover?
Excepted packages, industrial packages, Type A and Type B, with the activity limits that decide between them, and the marking, labelling and documentation that each one requires.
What are the transport index and criticality safety index?
Both are numbers that control how packages are loaded, separated and stowed. The course covers how each is determined, where it appears on the label and documents, and the limits that apply per aircraft.
Do our staff also need a GCAA function?
This is a specialised programme rather than one of the thirteen GCAA CBTA functions. Acceptance and handling staff usually hold the relevant GCAA function as well, and we will confirm which one applies to the roles involved.
Can this course be delivered at our facility?
Contact us to arrange on-site delivery across the UAE. Get in touch.
How do I confirm this is the right course?
